Addiction's founder, a leading Holistic Veterinarian and Clinical Nutritionist, was increasingly frustrated by the lack of healthy pet food options. He set out with a mission to develop a range of ultra-premium dog and cat foods using an innovative range of hypoallergenic protein sources that contain no by-products, fillers or preservatives. He eventually created a delicious ultra-premium formula that was also designed to manage allergies and promote wellness and vitality in pets.
When this formula was fed to his patients, he discovered that many pets loved the food so much that they were addicted to it and would eat no other brand after trying it! In addition, these pets showed great improvement in skin and coat health with continued feeding of his special food. This discovery made him decide to share the benefits of this formula with as many pets as possible.
Many devoted fans of this formula have suggested the name "Addiction" to us as they were amazed at how much their pets enjoyed the food, as opposed to stereotypical negative connotations normally associated with an addiction. Instead, the Addiction brand emphasizes the notion that pets with a healthy addiction to premium health-giving pet food are on to a good thing. Addiction's foods use low-fat, Omega-rich novel protein sources such as Brushtail, Kangaroo, Freshwater Eel (Unagi) and Venison. Each unique food flavour is packed with the whole meat, vegetables, antioxidants and vitamins, creating easy balanced, ultra-premium meals that pets will be happy with for a long-term. Back to top Based on the preparation instructions, you are advised to add 1 part Raw Dehydrated Food with 1 part water. Although the volume of Raw Dehydrated Food and the volume of water for rehydration is the same, the density of water is double that of the food. Therefore 2 lbs of Raw Dehydrated Food is rehydrated by 4 lbs of water by weight when added at a volume ratio of 1:1, and this thus gives you 6 lbs of fresh food. By feeding this food, you are helping to conserve New Zealand’s plant and animal life. You can read more about Addiction’s Earth Friendly initiative at www.addictionfoods.com/earth. Back to top Although we encourage you to add water to rehydrate the food before serving, some dogs may prefer the food served as it is without water added. This is perfectly fine, just ensure that fresh water is available at all times. Back to top Add 1 part of Raw Dehydrated Food with 1 part of warm water. Add less water if a thicker consistency is desired, and stir well before serving. You need not wait for all the water to be absorbed. Once rehydrated, consume within 4 hours. May feed dry if preferred. Back to top Novel protein sources of Brushtail, Kangaroo, Venison, Eel and King Salmon are used as the meat sources compared to common cuts of chicken, beef and lamb, which pets are usually allergic to. All other ingredients have also been specially selected due to their low-allergenic properties. Back to top All Addiction Canned Foods are grain-free. We have 2 grain-free options for the Raw Dehydrated Food range. They are Perfect Summer Brushtail and Fig’licious Venison Feast. Back to top The food is manufactured in Addiction’s own manufacturing plant in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. Back to top There are 4 delectable flavours of Addiction Raw Dehydrated Food - New Zealand Forest Delicacies, Perfect Summer Brushtail, Homestyle Venison & Cranberry Dinner and Fig’licious Venison Feast. Each features gourmet ingredients such as Manuka Honey, Sunflower Seeds, Cranberries and Figs. Back to top As raw dehydrated food is dried at low temperatures, nutrients such as vitamins, amino acids, fatty acids, enzymes, antioxidants and probiotics are better retained than in canned food and dry kibble. Back to top Raw Dehydrated Food is a new category of pet food. Raw ingredients such as meat, fruits and vegetables are dehydrated at gentle processing conditions to retain nutrients of the food. Moisture is also removed from the food to effectively prevent the growth of microorganisms, browning and spoilage. It provides higher nutrition than both canned food and dry kibble, and is also highly convenient. Back to top A recent study showed New Zealand's environment to be the healthiest in the world. The Pilot 2006 Environmental Performance Index (EPI) rates more than 130 countries on their performance and commitment to Environmental Health, Air Quality, Water Resources, Biodiversity and Habitat, Productive Natural Resources, and Sustainable Energy. Indicators within these categories include indoor air pollution, water issues, urban particulars, overfishing and CO2 production. Sweden, Finland, the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom are the next four countries on the list. - Animal Wellness Magazine Back to top If your cat has renal failure, it is important that your cat's diet should be managed by a veterinarian. There have been cats with renal failure that have done very well on Addiction, but because Addiction is a high protein canned food, it is important to mix it with a carbohydrate (e.g rice) to reduce the protein component of the meal. Back to top Addiction Cat Canned Foods are high in Protein and low in Carbohydrates. If you feed by "free-choice feeding" where cats eat as they wish when left to themselves it is important to monitor your cats weight and adjust the feeding amounts if necessary.
Unagi (Eel) is naturally high in Calcium, Chondroitin and Omega 3 and many owners find this wonderful for cats or dogs with Arthritis.
Also Unagi is found in the pristine freshwater streams in New Zealand and does not contain many of the pollutants found in marine fish. Back to top Our New Zealand Brushtail is harvested from the wild and are certified free from diseases by the New Zealand Government Veterinarians. Feeding Addiction's New Zealand Brushtail & Vegetables Entree, helps to conserve New Zealand's plant and animal life by reducing the destruction of native habitat. Back to top Holistic pet food focuses on a healthy and nutritious diet for your pets, using only natural ingredients in combination with health-enhancing vitamins and supplements. It contains no preservatives, chemicals or fillers that are commonly used in most commercial pet food, and which have been implicated in the worrying increase of pet cancers in recent years. In fact, holistic pet food blends have been found to aid in the prevention of pet diseases, particularly skin allergies and digestive problems, and help to enhance the natural lifespan of your pet.
Having laid out the benefits of holistic pet food, it is important to note that there is more to the concept of ‘holistic’ than just a natural diet. Your pets’ nutrition should be seen as a component of a holistic lifestyle, which entails embracing a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. Pets thrive in a clean, nurturing environment, and coupled with good food and veterinary care, will lead a high quality of life. Back to top The estimated 60-70 million Brushtails in New Zealand are targeted for control as they pose a threat to the natural habitat of New Zealand wildlife. They eat an estimated 21-25 tonnes of native forest per night, and are a danger to native bird species. Although declared an agricultural pest, Brushtail meat is healthy and contains significantly higher levels of Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids than other red meats, which are essential to your pets' health.
Addiction works in harmonious partnership with New Zealand to create an industry that provides a unique protein source for all pets while conserving the beauty of the New Zealand natural habitat. Our activities to harvest the Brushtails are fully supported by our Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, and our operation is conservation based and approved by the New Zealand government.
By feeding Addiction Brushtail & Vegetables Canned Food to your pet, the benefits are two fold - you are helping to conserve New Zealand's plant and animal life, and at the same time providing your pet with a nutritionally superior meal that promotes wellness and vitality.

Back to top Despite the similarity in appearance, the New Zealand Brushtail should not be confused with the North American Opossum (Didelphis Virginiana), which belongs to a different marsupial family from a very different part of the world. Only the NZ Brushtail is used in Addiction's Brushtail & Vegetables flavor, so you can be sure of premium quality New Zealand Brushtail meat in every can. Back to top One of the unique features of New Zealand Brushtail & Vegetables canned food is that the whole Brushtail (excluding the skin, fur and gut) is used. This means the food is very similar to what a dog would eat in the wild, containing bones rich in Calcium.
While most of the bones breakdown completely in cooking process, there are occasions where pea-sized bone fragments are found in the food. They are safe to consume and are a rich source of natural calcium.
In the Venison & Avocado canned food, only meat excluding bone is used. Back to top Addiction has created gourmet meals for your pet using unique ultra-premium meat sources such as Brushtail, Venison and Eel in first-of-its-kind flavors - Brushtail & Vegetables, Venison & Avocado and Unagi & Seaweed. Our food is ideal for fussy eaters or for those who are allergic to chicken, beef or lamb, and make delicious alternatives to regular pet food.
Addiction also uses a holistic and hypoallergenic pet food formula free from harmful fillers, additives and preservatives that are commonly used in most commercial pet food. Only natural ultra-premium meat, fresh vegetables, vitamins and supplements are incorporated to give your pet a natural, delicious nutritionally balanced meal.
Addiction is also made exclusively in New Zealand and Australia which are free from Mad-cow Disease, Bird-flu and Foot and Mouth Disease. Back to top Essential fatty acids are a form of polyunsaturated fat that are necessary for all pets' good health. However these cannot be synthesised by dogs and cats and must therefore be supplied in their diet.
Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids have been found time and again to play a vital role in the management of allergies and inflammatory skin conditions by building up a healthy skin barrier, help maintain a handsome coat and healthy skin, support the proper development of the nervous system and visual acuity, help regulate the blood flow to body tissues, aid in clotting after an injury, and help your pets' immune system respond to injury and infection. Feed 20% Addiction and 80% of the old food for first 2 days and gradually increase proportion of Addiction over the next 4 days. By the 6th day you can be confident of feeding Addiction for the rest of your pets' life.
It is critical that Addiction is slowly introduced to your pet over the 6-day period. Not following these guidelines may result in your pet experiencing gastrointestinal discomfort or related symptoms. Back to top Loose stools is a common occurrence if any new food, Addiction or otherwise, is introduced to a pet as it takes about 1 week for your pet to get accustomed to the new food. The feeding guidelines provided for the previous question are useful for those introducing Addiction to their pets for the first time. Back to top A wholesome meal for your dog can be achieved by feeding Addiction\'s Canned Food mixed with cooked carbohydrates, raw or blanched vegetables &/or fruits, highly digestible and low-allergy proteins like fish, eggs and potatoes. Always seek the advice of your veterinarian before embarking on any feeding for your dog or cat.
However, no commercial diet should replace totally fresh foods. They only serve to complement and also enhance it. You need not feed your dog only a specific flavor of Canned Food; to achieve optimal nutrition and break boredom, you can alternate between flavors like Addiction\'s Venison & Avocado, Unagi & Seaweed and Brushtail & Vegetables. Back to top Addiction is all natural and we do not use any artificial colors or flavoring. Therefore it is perfectly normal to see differences in colour &/or texture as found in nature! Back to top |
